Author: HARRISON COUNTY, WV: One person was injured Thursday morning, May 6, 2010, in a semi truck accident in Harrison County, West Virginia that closed the highway for several hours. The truck driver and a passenger were traveling on State Route 20 when the one truck collision occurred just south of the town of Romines Mills. The truck accident area is in the north central section of the state, about 45 miles south of Morgantown, WV and 250 miles west of Washington, DC.
West Virginia State Police and local emergency personnel from nearby Anmoore, Stonewood and Nutter Fort quickly responded to the scene of the truck accident.
At around 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning truck driver David Pigott was driving south on Route 20 in Harrison County, West Virginia. The truck driver’s son, David W. Pigott, was a passenger in the truck at the time. The semi truck is owned by Harco Trucking based in Shinnston, WV. The trailer truck was carrying a load of paper products and was reportedly headed to Sago in Upshur County, WV.
As the semi trailer truck traveled Route 20 in the area south of Romines Mills Mr. Pigott apparently lost control of the 18 wheeler rig when the passenger side wheels of the truck hit a soft section of the highway’s shoulder. The trailer truck went off the highway and then flipped over onto its side. The semi truck crashed through a guardrail and finally came to a rest hanging off the edge of an embankment at the side of the highway.
West Virginia State Police and local emergency personnel from nearby Anmoore, Stonewood and Nutter Fort quickly responded to the scene of the truck accident. The truck driver was apparently able to disembark on his own from the cab and was not injured.
However when the truck rolled over onto its side it got pinned up against the highway guardrail and trapped the younger son in the truck. Rescue crews had to use various tools to cut through the cab to reach the son and they would spend over an hour working to extricate him from the truck. Once free the truck driver’s son was stabilized at the scene and then medically airlifted by a Health-Net helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV. His current condition is not known.

Because of the morning truck accident WV State Police shut down Route 20 while rescue personnel assisted the victim and to clear a spot for the medical helicopter to land and take off. It remained closed for most of the day while highway crews removed debris from the roadway and other teams worked to upright the semi trailer truck and pull it back off the embankment.
The truck accident also damaged several telephone and cable lines and local utility workers were brought in to make the necessary repairs. It is not known if the truck accident caused any service outages.
Route 20 would remain closed for most of the day, finally reopening shortly after 5:00 p.m. Thursday evening.
The WV State Police have conducted an initial reconstruction of the truck accident and do not believe speed or reckless driving were factors.
At this time no charges or citations are expected to be given and the truck accident remains under investigation.
