According to Illinois State Police who responded to the truck accident, the semi trailer truck attempted to change lanes and crashed into the smaller box truck. The driver of the box truck apparently lost control, crossing over lanes of traffic and smashing into the concrete barrier in the construction area.

The impact of the collision broke the box truck open and the contents spilled out onto the roadway. The 350 cases of alcohol were reportedly a mix of rum and other hard liquors. Some of the bottles broke as they hit the pavement creating a mess during the morning commuter rush.

Local emergency personnel responded to the truck accident and treated the two truck drivers and transported them to Adventist Glen Oaks Hospital in nearby Glendale Heights. According to the ISP their injuries were minor and not life threatening.

Equipment was bought in to clean up the site of the truck accident. A front loader scooped up the smashed boxes of alcohol and crews clean-up the shattered glass and other debris. ISP shut down several of the southbound and northbound lanes of I-355 while the crews worked.

The closures would last for about 90 minutes and caused major delays as commuters were diverted around the scene of the truck accident. According to ISP, southbound traffic was backed up for about five miles and northbound lanes were backed up for about three miles. All lanes on the interstate were reopened shortly before 9:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Authorities reconstructing the truck accident determined that the driver of the semi trailer was responsible and he was cited for Improper Lane Usage. It is not known if additional charges will be brought and the truck accident remains under investigation.
