BRINSON, GA – Two people were hurt in a rear-end truck accident that happened Tuesday afternoon, July 10, on a highway in Decatur County, Georgia. The collision, which involved a semi truck, a front loader, and a pick-up truck, occurred on U.S. Highway 84 near the city of Brinson. The accident area is in the far southwest section of the state, about 54 miles northwest of Tallahassee, Florida and about 150 miles southeast of Montgomery, Alabama.

After rear-ending the pick-up, the driver of the semi trailer truck apparently lost control of his rig.

At about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon Jesse Huckeba, an employee of Glenn Heard Farms based in Brinson, was driving a front loader in the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 84 in Decatur County, GA. Behind the slow-moving vehicle was a pick-up truck driven by Chris Bale of Miller County, GA. The pick-up was following the front loader as a safety precaution and had its emergency flasher lights activated.

At the same time a Volvo semi trailer truck was also traveling in the westbound lanes of U.S. 84. The semi tractor truck was owned by Eleets Trucking based out of Jacksonville, Florida and was driven by Terry Wilbert of Hinesville, GA.

Mr. Bale, the driver of the pick-up truck, was treated and transported to nearby Memorial Hospital. He hurt his back and sustained other injuries which are believed to be non life threatening.

As the driver of the Volvo 18 wheeler truck neared the intersection of U.S. 84 and Georgia State Route 310 he encountered the front loader and the trailing pick-up truck. Mr. Wilber, the semi truck driver, determined that he was traveling at a higher rate of speed than the two farm vehicles and attempted to change lanes to avoid a collision.

The Volvo 18 wheeler truck swung into the inner lane of the highway but still caught the rear section of the pick-up truck. The force of the impact shoved the pick-up truck into the farm loader. After colliding with the front loader the pick-up truck went off the road and overturned in a ditch alongside the north side of the highway. The rollover occurred on the driver’s side, momentarily trapping Mr. Bale in his vehicle. He was able to crawl out after a few minutes.

After rear-ending the pick-up, the driver of the semi trailer truck apparently lost control of his rig. He traveled almost 500 more feet, crossing over the center of the highway and the eastbound lanes of the highway. The semi tractor truck then crashed into the wooded area next to U.S. 84 slamming into a tree where it finally came to a rest.

Georgia State Patrol troopers responded to the site along with local emergency personnel. Mr. Bale, the driver of the pick-up truck, was treated and transported to nearby Memorial Hospital. He hurt his back and sustained other injuries which are believed to be non life threatening.

Mr. Wilbert, the driver of the Volvo semi truck, complained of chest pains and was stabilized and also taken to Memorial Hospital. Mr. Huckeba, the driver of the front loader, was reportedly not injured but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

GSP shut down a section of U.S. 84 surrounding the truck accident site while troopers conducted a reconstruction of the collision and highway crews removed the debris and wreckage of the vehicles involved in the crash.

At this time no charges have been made and the truck accident remains under investigation.
