DELRAY BEACH, FL – A single vehicle truck accident cut off the electricity Monday, January 24, for a neighborhood in Palm Beach County in Delray Beach. Delray Beach is about 8 milles from Boca Raton Florida. Multiple utility poles were snapped and lines pulled down in the crash which occurred at an intersection in the city of Delray Beach. The truck accident area is on the far southeast coast of Florida, about 52 miles north of Miami, FL and about 360 miles south of St. Mary’s, Georgia.

On Monday morning an unidentified semi driver was traveling through Palm Beach County, near the southeast coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The tractor trailer was fitted with a hopper and the semi was described as a commercial dump truck. It is not known where the 18 wheeler was headed when the truck accident occurred or if it was carrying any cargo.

Shortly before 10:00 a.m. Monday morning the semi driver had reached the city of Delray Beach and was approaching the intersection of West Atlantic Avenue and Lyons Road when the truck accident happened. It is believed the 18 wheeler dump truck was on West Atlantic Ave.

According to at least one witness to the truck accident, the hopper section of the tractor trailer was raised as the semi moved through the intersection. The raised hopper snagged on several power lines, and the utility poles began to snap as the truck rolled forward through the street. Some of the lines dropped to the ground creating a potentially dangerous situation.

The downed electrical lines also cut off power to the immediate neighborhood, affecting several homes and businesses. Officials said that the traffic signal lights at the intersection went dead after the truck accident and it appeared one had crashed down.

Fortunately no other persons or vehicles were involved in the single vehicle truck accident. Local police and emergency personnel rushed to the crash site, but there were no reports of injuries. The semi driver was apparently able to get out of the cab section of his 18 wheeler and safely moved away from the downed electrical lines.

Police immediately shut down part of the intersection of West Atlantic Avenue and Lyons Road. Motorists going eastbound on West Atlantic Ave were allowed to go through the intersection, but westbound drivers were diverted around the truck accident site and forced to detour on southbound One Mile Road. Palm Beach County Sheriff Deputies took control of the intersection and directed traffic for several hours on Monday.

Utility workers were brought to the site of the truck accident to repair and replace the damaged power lines and snapped poles. Crews on the ground replaced the ruined poles while other workers used utility trucks with cherry pickers to install new power lines. One official stated that they expected the clean-up work to continue through Monday afternoon. Some nearby companies would end up losing a full business day due to the electrical outages.

Police would continue to reroute traffic around the site of the truck accident until the work was complete and the intersection was safe for travel.

At this time the driver has not been charged in the incident. Although one witness claims the hopper on the semi truck was raised at the time of the truck accident, officials have not confirmed this information. If the driver is found responsible for the crash, the driver or his employer may also be liable for the cost of Monday’s clean-up.

Police are reconstructing the crash and interviewing witnesses and are expected to release a statement at the conclusion of the truck accident investigation.
