HOUSTON, TX – Officers from the Houston Police Department arrested a local tanker truck driver in early May 2011 who has been accused of illegally dumping hundreds of thousands of gallons of toxic waste into ditches, storm drains, and retention ponds in northwest Houston and adjacent parts of Harris and Waller Counties.

The truck driver, identified as Lonnie Earl Perkins, was followed by police to a deserted lane just off N. Houston-Rosslyn Road where he allegedly emptied the truck’s contents into a drainage ditch.

The Examiner.com reports:

Perkins is employed by New Energy Fuels of Waller County (just northwest of Houston), a company in the business of converting waste cooking oil to biodiesel. According to city officials, other drivers for the company are also suspected of illegally dumping toxic wastes. It’s nasty stuff, too: city officials state that the highly acidic wastes, material the company could not convert to fuel, contains methanol and other pollutants.

A police spokesperson said that cleanup efforts at nine sites in Harris and Waller Counties have cost more than one-half million dollars to date.
