The tanker ruptured in the accident and thousands of gallons of diesel fuel was spilled onto the roadway and over the edge of the highway and onto the frontage road below. Environmental crews were called in to assist in the cleanup. Estimates put the total spillage at around 8,000 gallons.

An article at the YourFortBendNews.com website reported on the story:

“It can take quite a bit of time before we can open the road,” said Doug Adolph, Sugar Land’s assistant communications director. “Fatalities usually take awhile to investigate and cleaning up diesel fuel from the ruptured tank will take some time as well.”

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) issued a statement about the incident and announced that the outbound main lanes of US 59 would be closed into the rush hour. Traffic was backed up for miles and southbound motorists were urged to take the feeder road while traveling south.
