DENISON, TX – James Hedgcoke, 81, of Durant Oklahoma was killed Tuesday afternoon just after 2:30 p.m. when his pickup swerved into an 18 wheeler truck in the northbound lanes of Highway 75 near the Texas Travel Information Center in Denison. Hedgcoke was pronounced dead on the scene.
According to the Denison Police, Hedgcoke was traveling southbound on U.S. 75 when for an unknown reason he cut across the median into the northbound lanes and hit a moving company semi truck, causing the tractor trailer to flip over on its side. The semi completely crushed Hedgcoke’s car. The driver of the semi was not injured.
KXII News reports:
We spoke to a woman who was one of the first on the scene. Sarah Stewart says the first thing she saw was a big cloud of smoke and that’s when she immediately called 911.
“I noticed the white truck that looked completely smashed in, and I saw the 18 wheeler, which looked overturned so I stopped my car and got on the phone with 911 and called them,” Stewart says.
Denison Police Lt. Mike Eppler says where the the pickup made impact caused the semi to flip.
“The pickup hit the trailer close to the wheels and the trailer tractor turned over,” Eppler said.
Hedgcoke’s body was sent to the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office in McKinney. Police say they are still investigating to get more information on the cause, but they say they do not believe alcohol was a factor.
