Truck Driver Injured in 18 Wheeler Accident Near Ocean Springs Mississippi

JACKSON COUNTY, MS – A 18 wheeler truck driver traveling eastbound on the Interstate 10 on Thursday, July 14 crashed into a wooded area and overturned, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol Master Sgt. Johnny Poulos.

The accident happened at about 11:30 a.m near mile marker 55 about a mile west of the Mississippi 57 exit.

The truck driver, identified as Darrell Jefferson, 62, of Pascagoula, suffered moderate injuries after his 18-wheeler lost a tire, veered off Interstate 10 eastbound, crashed into a wooded area and overturned, said Mississippi Highway Patrol Master Sgt. Johnny Poulos.

Jefferson was cut from the pinned cab by emergency crews and airlifted to South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile where he remained hospitalized Thursday night.

Witnesses said they saw the truck’s right tire blow before it ran off the road. The wreck caused some traffic delays in both the east- and westbound lanes, mostly because of motorists slowing down to see the accident. The interstate was never blocked off because of the crash, Poulos said. He said some time later another minor crash was reported in the area, though no injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
