ROCHESTER, MN – The driver of a semi truck was killed in a fiery crash in Rochester, MN when his big rig went out of control, ran off the road and then plowed into a local business, injuring two of its occupants in the process.
Rochester is located in Olmsted County, Minnesota in the southeastern corner of the state about 84 miles southeast of Bloomington, 87 miles southeast of Minneapolis and about 78 miles southeast of St. Paul.
The accident occurred on Monday, September 19, 2011 just before 4:00 p.m. The trucker who died in the crash was identified as Benjamin Heim, 25 years old from St. Charles, MN.
The semi truck was heading southbound on State Highway 52 when it unexpectedly careened out of control and off the highway just above 7th St Northwest. The big rig traveled down an embankment, across West Frontage Road, across 7th St. NW and then plowed into ServiceMaster Clean, a local disaster restoration business.
The tractor-trailer rammed out the back-end of the ServiceMaster Clean building and into some trees and then became engulfed in flames next to the railroad tracks.
Two ServiceMaster employees were injured in the accident. Rescue workers had to free one of the employees who was pinned under her desk after the crash.
Officials are investigating the crash but it is a mystery. One witness saw Heim pass her on the road before swerving across three lanes of traffic just before the accident.
There are no details on the trucking company or the cargo being transported at the time or the circumstances that led to the accident.
