LAS VEGAS, NV – A retired school teacher was killed on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 when she was struck by a UPS truck in Las Vegas, NV.

Las Vegas is located in Clark County, Nevada in the southern part of the state about 17 miles northwest of Henderson, 3 miles northwest of Paradise and about 4.5 miles east of Spring Valley.

The victim was identified as Margery Louise Gill, 69 years old from Las Vegas, who was a veteran of the Clark County School District for 41 years. Three years ago Gill worked at Vandenburg Elementary School in Henderson and also continued to volunteer there.

The UPS driver was identified as David McCallum, 41 years old. He had just finished delivering a parcel only a few feet away and was pulling forward when the accident occurred.

The accident occurred just after 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon in the 2400 block of Swan Ridge Ave. between Hawk Canyon St. and Hummingbird Ave. It happened  right in front of the victim’s home while she was crossing the street to check her mail. Friends, neighbors, fellow instructors, parents and students were shocked and saddened by the news of her death.

The UPS driver said that he didn’t see Gill until after he felt that his truck hit something. He applied his brakes after he felt and heard the impact. A witness who saw the accident said that Gill was on the UPS driver’s blind side.

Gill was rushed to Sunrise Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

It is not known exactly what caused the deadly accident or who was at fault but it is currently under investigation by Las Vegas Metro Police. They believe there was no indication that drugs, alcohol or speed were a factor in the incident. The Nevada Highway Patrol has also been brought in to help with the investigation.

McCallum has not been charged. UPS has removed him from his route while they are doing an independent investigation of their own.
