Fire Chief Larry Hess from St. Tammany Parish 1st Fire Protection District told the media that the tanker was carrying 4,000 gallons of the waste chemical “spent caustic,” which had been picked up from the Exxon refinery in Chalmette earlier in the day.

The accident occurred at about 12:09 p.m. closing down I-10 between the I-12/I-59 split and the Mississippi border. The 18-wheeler accident closed all traffic on Interstates 10, 12 and 59 as officials checked the truck for possibly hazardous materials. Traffic reopened in one lane after 1 pm because the chemical posed only a contact hazard, not an inhalation one to the public, according to Hess.

The truck driver and two people in the damaged vehicle appeared to suffer minor to moderate injuries, and they were transported by paramedics to a hospital.

Louisiana State Police and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene along with the fire department and paramedics. A State Police Hazardous Materials crew was dispatched, and units were planning to lay down a load of sand around the tanker as a precautionary measure, Hess said.

The accident remains under investigation at this time.
