GREEN HILL, AL: Two people died and two others were critically injured in a head-on truck accident in Alabama Friday morning. The accident happened on US 43 in Green Hill, AL in Lauderdale County. The area is in the far northwest section of the state just a few miles from the Tennessee border, 105 miles south of Nashville, TN and 139 miles northwest of Birmingham, AL.
According to State troopers, 37 year old Leila Duncan of Lexington, AL was the driver of the smaller vehicle and had 3 passengers, her 9 year old daughter Maggie, 41 year old Diana Vandiver of Killen, AL, and Vandiver’s 13 month old niece Jaden…
Shortly after 11:30 a.m. Friday morning, Ms. Duncan was driving a 2006 Chevrolet HHR north on US 43. At the intersection of US 43 and Lauderdale 140, she attempted to make a left turn to head west on Lauderdale 140.
As Ms. Duncan was turning left, she apparently hit a patch of ice on the road and lost control of her vehicle. The Chevy HHR crashed into the front of a 2002 Freightliner tractor trailer truck that was traveling south on US 43 at the time.
After the head-on truck accident, the semi tractor trailer went off the road and came to a stop in a ditch along the west side of the highway. The truck driver was identified as 58 year old Robert Gilbert of Florence, AL.
Local emergency personnel arrived at the scene and treated and stabilized the truck accident victims. All four occupants of the Chevy HHR were taken to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence about 18 miles away. Ms. Vandiver and 9 year old Maggie Duncan had each suffered fatal injuries in the truck accident and both died at the hospital.

Officials reported that the car driver, Ms. Duncan, was admitted to the intensive care unit at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital with critical injuries.
The 13 month old baby, Jaden Vandiver, was originally taken to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital, and then transferred to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham. Her condition was listed as critical.
The truck driver, Mr. Gilbert, was not seriously injured in the truck accident. The highway was littered with debris and car parts after the collision, and the front section of the tractor trailer truck was heavily damaged.
The weather was severe on Friday, with a mixture of ice, snow and sleet falling during the morning hours. At least one witness to the truck accident said that it looked like the Chevy hit a slippery spot on the highway as the driver was making her left turn.
STREET VIEW
Although State troopers concede that the wintery weather was likely a factor in the fatal truck accident, they are still investigating the collision. They did report that everyone in the Chevy was wearing their seatbelt, as was the truck driver.
No charges or citations have been made at this time.
