LAKE WALES, FL – A motorcyclist was killed in a multi vehicle semi truck crash on Tuesday, March 6, just south of Warner University on U.S. 27 in Lake Wales, FL.

Horrific semi truck accident on U.S. 27 in Lake Wales, FL claims the life of a motorcyclist and critically injures the driver of an SUV on March 6, 2012.

Lake Wales is located in Polk County, Florida in the central part of the state about 170 miles northwest of Boca Raton, 81 miles east of Clearwater and about 79 miles northeast of St. Petersburg.

The crash occurred just before 5:00 a.m. south of County Road 640 on U.S. 27 between Lake Wales and Frostproof.

Details are sketchy, but it appears that a southbound semi truck crossed over the grassy median and into the northbound lanes of traffic where it struck on oncoming SUV, a Ford Expedition. A motorcyclist then crashed into the 18 wheeler and was killed at the scene.

The driver of the Ford Expedition was critically injured and was transported to Lakeland Regional Trauma Center in Lakeland, Fl.

Thick fog and smoke were a factor in this accident. Prior to the crash, there was a 60 acre controlled burn just west of the crash site. The combination of smoke and fog lead to low visibility.
