BRENHAM, TX — A 31-year-old Temple man was killed when the pickup he was driving collided head-on with an oncoming Exxon Mobil tanker truck.

The fatal accident occurred on Wednesday, May 30, at about 5 a.m. when the driver of the pick-up fell asleep at the wheel and drifted into an oncoming Exxon Mobil tanker truck on Texas 36 at Brenham in Washington County, according to a Department of Public Safety trooper.

The victim was identified as 31-year-old Lazaro Esparza Jr from Temple. Esparza was traveling southbound on Texas 36 when his 2009 Ford pickup struck the tanker.

The semi truck driver was indentified as 43-year old Martin Lovell Harris from Houston. Lovell did not appear to be injured.

Esparza was pronounced dead on the scene, and his body was taken to Brenham Memorial Chapel. DPS said there were no other injuries.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
