CHARLOTTE, NC — An accident involving a vehicle and tractor trailer shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 on Wednesday morning, July 18, after a driver of a truck attempted to take the exit off of the interstate, but swerved back into traffic and cut off the tractor trailer.

A passenger vehicle was completely demolished in a semi truck accident on I-85 near the I-77 interchange in Charlotte on July 18, 2012.

State troopers told WBTV the accident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. at the exit for Statesville Avenue where it created a pile up, and involved two other cars and another tractor trailer. Seven people were injured.

WBTV reports:

The crash is in the same location where a tractor trailer burst into flames on Friday, killing one person after the truck driver smashed into another vehicle. Three vehicles were involved total.

North Carolina Highway Patrol tells WBTV that the location is considered a coincidence at this time.

“I believe it’s just a coincidence, we have a lot of wrecks in this area, it’s unfortunate that we had two serious ones here together,” said Trooper Glen Tupper.

The tractor trailer driver, Nestor Estero was ticketed after the crash for failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
