EL PASO, TX — A tragic accident involving multiple vehicles and a semi truck claimed the life of an El Paso police officer who was trying to remove a ladder from the eastbound I-10.

An El Paso Police Officer was killed in a multi-vehicle accident involving a semi truck, an SUV and a compact car. The officer was hit by one of the vehicles while trying to clear a ladder from the roadway on Interstate 10 in El Paso, TX on December 16, 2012.

The accident occurred at about 7:15 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, as 27-year-old police officer, Angel Garcia, was responding to a traffic hazard call on I-10 near Hawkins. Police told the media that Garcia parked his patrol car onto the side of the interstate and properly turned on his hazard lights while wearing the proper safety gear.

Detective Mike Baranyay of the El Paso Police Department said, “The officer located the ladder in the roadway exited his vehicle with his emergency equipment, his lights on in the vehicle and approached to remove the ladder, to free up the roadway. At that point a chain reaction collision occurred involving a total of four vehicles.”

As Garcia was attempting to remove a ladder from the interstate, several vehicles, including a semi-truck, a Ford Explorer and a Hyundai Elantra, collided. Police said one of the vehicles struck Garcia.

Police have not yet determined which vehicle hit him.

Garcia was taken to Del Sol Medical Center where he died as a result of his injuries.

Both the driver and the passenger of the Ford Explorer were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
