SOCORRO, Texas — A man from Socorro Texas was killed last Monday, January 7, after he rear-ended a semi-truck and was crushed to death from the impact.
The accident occurred at 8:46 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, on the I-10 East on-ramp near Gateway East Boulevard and Horizon Boulevard where officers said the victim died instantly after his white Chevrolet pickup truck rear-ended a semi-truck on the access road.
The victim was identified as 60-year old Paul Wayne Tims of Clint, but spokesman David Garcia said he was known as a Socorro resident.
KFOX News Reports:
Garcia told KFOX14 Tims may have been going at a high rate of speed, and that there were no signs he ever tried to stop.
Garcia said there were no signs of skid marks. The whole front end of the truck was crushed from the impact.
“He never touched the brakes as he drove under the trailer,” said Garcia
“The tractor trailer was attempting to get on to the ramp,” said Garcia, “The white Chevrolet pick-up never, ever touched his brakes, never stopped, just drove under the trailer.
Investigators said the semi-truck driver is cooperating with the investigation. They warn other drivers to always use caution when driving near a big rig.
“These trucks can’t accelerate as fast as a pick-up truck or any other type of vehicle,” said Garcia, “It’s very easy for everybody to be accelerating, on to the freeway and suddenly come upon a vehicle that’s moving slower.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
