NEW DEAL, Texas — A tractor trailer carrying diesel fuel and batteries fell off an overpass and crashed on March 26 in New Deal, Texas, spilling the fuel and batteries on the road below. The town of New Deal, TX is located 12 miles north of Lubbock.
The accident occurred just before 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 25, when a semi truck hauling batteries and traveling southbound on the I-27, plowed through metal guardrails separating the median and landed on the frontage road lanes under the bridge.
Hazardous materials crews and first responders from across Lubbock County were called and arrived on the scene. The driver, whose name was not released at the time of the incident, was trapped in the cab of the truck for more than 15 minutes until first responders were able to extract him.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the truck driver received injuries that were not considered life threatening and was taken to Covenant Medical Center by AeroCare following the crash.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
