FORNEY, TX – A semi truck blew out a tire and caught fire on a bridge on U.S. Highway 80 over the Trinity River near Farm-to-Market 460 on August 2 in Forney, TX. Forney is located in Kaufman County, Texas in the north-central part of the state about 21 miles east of Dallas.
State Trooper Kyle Bradford told NBC 5 that the driver jerked the vehicle to the left and struck the bridge and that the cab of the tractor-trailer caught fire. Fire crews could also be seen from Chopper NBC News 5 putting out flames in some brush below the bridge.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the driver of the 18-wheeler was traveling eastbound on U.S. 80 when the front tire on the vehicle blew out. The trucker was taken by air ambulance to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Three firefighters were also take to a hospital for observation of heat-related problems.
The media reported that the eastbound lanes of U.S. 80 at Farm-to-Market Road 460 were shut down due to the accident, but the highway reopened by 6 p.m. after crews cleared debris and inspected the bridge.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
