Author: NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL – A man was killed and his passenger injured when the SUV they were traveling in was rear-ended by a semi trailer truck in Volusia County, Florida early Wednesday morning, May 26, 2010. The truck accident happened near the city of New Smyrna Beach, FL on Interstate 95 and State Route 9, just south of State Route 44. The accident area is in the north central section of the state, about 56 miles northeast of Orlando and about 15 miles south of Daytona Beach.
Several departments responded to the truck-car collision, including Florida Highway Patrol, Volusia County Sheriffs, and Edgewater Police.
At around 4:00 a.m. Wednesday morning 50 year old Terry L. Eveleth of McFarland, Kansas was driving a semi tractor trailer north on Interstate 95. At one point the truck driver was following a 1999 Chevrolet SUV on the interstate driven by an unidentified 60 year old male from Edgewater, FL and a female passenger.
As the truck driver neared the juncture with State Route 9 he slammed into the back of the SUV. It is not known at this time if the SUV had slowed down or if it malfunctioned in some way.
After being hit by the semi trailer truck the SUV spun around on the interstate counterclockwise and then flipped over onto its roof. The vehicle finally came to a rest on State Route 9. The 18 wheeler also came to a stop on State Route 9.
The rear end truck accident injured the two occupants of the SUV and caused considerable damage to their vehicle. Local emergency personnel who responded to the collision found that the male driver suffered fatal injuries and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger was treated and stabilized at the accident site before being transported to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. The woman’s injuries have been described as critical.

The truck driver, Mr. Eveleth, was not injured in the truck accident.
Several departments responded to the truck-car collision, including Florida Highway Patrol, Volusia County Sheriffs, and Edgewater Police. The officers shut down a section of Interstate 95 around the accident scene while troopers investigated and highway crews cleared debris out of the traffic lanes. Northbound drivers were routed off the interstate at the exit for Road 442, then to north US 1, and then onto US 44 west where they could then reenter I-95.
The northbound lanes were closed from right after 4:00 a.m. until sometime mid morning, impacting the entire morning commuter rush.
Officials investigating the truck accident believe that the truck driver may have been following too closely or driving too fast at the time he rear-ended the SUV. No charges or citations have been made at this time and the truck accident remains under investigation.
