Deadly Florida Truck Accident Kills Mother, Injures Children

HASTINGS, FL – A mother was killed Tuesday morning, June 8, in a truck accident in St. John’s County, Florida. The deadly collision, which also injured two children, occurred at the intersection of State Road 206 and State Road 207 in the city of Hastings, FL. The area is in the northeast section of the state, about 105 miles north of Orlando, FL and about 175 miles southeast of Valdosta, Georgia.

St. John’s County Fire Rescue and emergency personnel responded to the truck accident and worked to extricate the three victims from the crushed car. It would take two heavy rescue teams to get the mother and children out of the Pontiac.

Shortly after 7:30 a.m. 25 year old Lindsey Wood was driving a 2002 red Pontiac Grand Am north on State Road 207, reportedly at a high rate of speed. Ms. Woods had her two children in the car with her, 3 year old Abigal Underwood and 6 year old Caleb Underwood. The mother and children, residents of Hastings, were headed to drop the 3 year old at day care and take the 6 year old to school.

As Ms. Wood was reportedly speeding down SR 207 she moved into the left lane of the highway, directly behind a semi trailer truck driven by 43 year old Anthony T. Jones of Walstonburg, North Carolina. As the two vehicles approached the intersection of SR 207 and SR 206 the traffic light changed to red and the driver of the 18 wheeler applied his brakes and began to bring the rig to a stop.

Ms. Wood either didn’t notice the trailer truck was stopping or was too close, and slammed into the right back section of the truck. The impact of the truck accident pinned the small red car under the semi trailer, trapping the woman and the two children.

St. John’s County Fire Rescue and emergency personnel responded to the truck accident and worked to extricate the three victims from the crushed car. It would take two heavy rescue teams to get the mother and children out of the Pontiac.

Once free the three victims were transported by Trauma One and Lifeflight medical helicopters to Shands Medical Center in Jacksonville, about 52 miles away.

Ms. Wood suffered fatal injuries in the truck accident and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The two children were listed in serious condition with non-life threatening injuries.

The truck driver sustained minor injuries in the rear-end collision.

Florida Highway Patrol authorities investigating the fatal truck accident found that Ms. Wood and the two children were not wearing seat belts or using safety seats at the time of the crash.

At this time they have not determined why the driver slammed into the back trailer of the truck. Officials are waiting for the results of a toxicology test to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors in the deadly collision.

No charges have been made and the truck accident remains under investigation.
