MIRAMAR, FL – A semi truck overturned on Interstate 75 in Miramar, Florida just north of Miramar Parkway, trapping the driver. The tractor-trailer accident occurred a little before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 just as the evening commute began.

Miramar is in Broward County, Florida in the southeastern part of the state about 7 miles southwest of Hollywood, about 17 miles north of Miami, about 221 miles south of Orlando, about 658 miles southeast of Pensacola, about 466 miles southeast of Tallahassee and about 16 miles southwest of Fort Lauderdale.

The accident happened in the northbound lanes of I-75 when the big rig rolled over after hitting a guardrail. The driver of the 18 wheeler was trapped in his cab which was partially submerged upside down in a shallow canal and had to be extricated by rescue workers.

Location of the semi truck accident in Miramar, Florida just north of Miramar Parkway.

According to The Broward County Sheriff’s Office, rescue workers from the Miramar and Pembroke Pines fire departments worked to extricate the driver from the overturned vehicle. They had to climb over the wreckage and after about 20 minutes managed to free the trapped driver who was then airlifted and transported to Memorial Regional Hospital on a trauma alert. The condition of the 67-year-old semi truck driver was not immediately known at the time.

Traffic was halted in both directions on the interstate when Broward Sheriff’s Office Air Rescue responded and landed on the highway just north of the crash scene. The northbound lanes of I-75 were closed to make room for the rescue helicopter to land. As of 6:00 p.m., one lane still remained blocked. Apparently, only the tractor-trailer appeared to be involved in the incident.

It is not clear what caused the mishap, but the Florida Highway Patrol will be investigating the crash. Representatives from the Broward County Sheriff’s Fire Rescue said that the driver of the tractor-trailer was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
