CORPUS CHRISTI, TX  – Truck accident lawyer news blog reports that a semi truck carrying a load of a dangerous chemical rolled over on a highway in south Texas on Wednesday morning, December 1st. The truck accident happened in the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 77 where it passes over Interstate 37, just west of the city of Corpus Christi, TX. The accident area is in the far south section of the state on the eastern edge of the horn, about 138 miles east of Laredo, TX and about 340 miles southwest of Lake Charles, Louisiana.

On Wednesday morning, December 1, an 18 wheeler truck was traveling north on U.S. Highway 77 in south Texas. The trailer section of the truck was carrying containers filled with Paraformaldehyde in solid form, a hazardous material that can be used as a disinfectant or to prepare pure formaldehyde. The semi truck and chemical load is owned by Celanese Corporation, a chemical production company based in Dallas, TX. The trailer truck was taking the chemical from its plant in Bishop to Houston at the time of the truck accident. The driver is employed by a trucking company based in Houston.

At about 10:00 a.m. Wednesday morning the unidentified truck driver was north on US. 77 near the border between Nueces and San Patricio counties when he lost control of the 18 wheeler. The truck accident happened as the semi was on the overpass that crosses over I-37. The driver was unable to keep the semi trailer upright and the truck rolled over onto its side.

No other persons or vehicles were involved in the truck accident.

Emergency personnel from several departments responded to the flipped semi truck. Officers with the Corpus Christi Police immediately shut down the northbound lanes of US 77, rerouting traffic around the overturned semi trailer. A hazardous materials team was also called to the site of the truck accident in case the 18 wheeler lost any of its cargo of chemical.

The truck driver was apparently able to get out of the cab section of the semi and was not injured in the rollover truck accident. The containers holding the paraformaldehyde reportedly remained intact and none of the chemical spilled out.

The northbound lanes of US 77 stayed closed for most of the day while various crews worked to clear the traffic lanes on the overpass. A heavy duty tow truck was brought to the crash site and towed the cab section of the truck off the highway. A second tractor trailer was brought to the scene of the truck accident and the chemical load was transferred from the flipped semi before the disabled truck was hauled away.

An official with the Corpus Christi Fire Department said that because the chemical was in a solid form it was easier to remove and posed less of a threat of leaking or spilling. The official did confirm that residents of the area were alerted to the potential danger and advised to stay away from the truck accident site until crews finished clearing the traffic lanes.

Authorities have conducted a reconstruction of the incident but have not yet released their findings to the public. The weather was clear at the time of the truck accident and is not considered a factor in the single vehicle crash. The driver was interviewed by law enforcement after the rollover and it is believed he will face further questioning by his employer.

No charges or citations have been issued at this time and the truck accident remains under investigation.
