MOBILE, AL – A charter bus carrying 48 band students and two chaperones from Del Rio, Texas, was traveling to Orlando Florida when it collided with an overturned 18 wheeler near the Mississippi line early Monday, injuring about two dozen people.
The accident occurred at 12:34 a.m. at the 7-mile marker in the Grand Bay area just a few miles inside Alabama on I-10, Trooper Greg Eubanks, trooper spokesman said.
AL.com reports:
Superintendent Kelt Cooper, of the San Felipe/Del Rio Consolidate Independent School District in Del Rio, Texas, said that students were traveling to Orlando, Fla., in two chartered buses on a trip organized by parents. The trip is not a school-sponsored activity, Cooper said today.
Del Rio is on the Mexican border, more than two hours west of San Antonio.
Cooper said that a semi had rolled over in the eastbound lanes and the driver of the first bus attempted to avoid the truck and clipped it. The second bus was not involved in the accident, he said.
Ninety-eight students were on the trip with 54 aboard the first bus, he said, adding that 26 students were taken to area hospitals, none of them with life-threatening injuries.
Three students remained hospitalized this morning, Cooper said. One student with liver and lung injuries was air-lifted to the University of South Alabama Medical Center, officials said. Of the remaining two, one student had a leg injury and the other had facial injuries, he said.
Two band directors, five chaperones and a 13-year-old sibling of one of the band students were also on the trip, Cooper said. The trip is taken annually, he said.
Cooper said that he received a telephone call about 1:30 a.m., regarding the accident from a high school principal whose son is on the trip.
Cooper said he does not know whether the students will continue to Florida or return to Texas.
