GROVE CITY, MN – A fiery crash occurred just north of Grove City, MN when a semi truck collided with a garbage truck on Thursday, October 13, 2011.
Grove City is located in Meeker County Minnesota in the south-central part of the state about 84 miles northwest of St. Paul, 81 miles northwest of Bloomington and 75 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
The accident happened around 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon at the intersection of Minnesota State Highway 4 and 300th St. The 18-wheeler was traveling westbound on 300th St was hit broadside by a southbound garbage truck heading towards Grove City on Minnesota State Highway 4.
The tractor-trailer rolled over and burst into flames. Fortunately, the driver, Jerry E. Weseman 59 years old, from Grove City, escaped with non-life threatening injury. He was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in St. Cloud, MN.
The driver of the garbage truck, Aaron P. Cain, 31 years old from Willmar, MN was also injured in the accident and was transported to the Meeker Memorial Hospital by ground ambulance.
There are stop signs on 300th St. on both sides of the intersection, therefore it appears evident that the accident was caused by the big rig driver.
According to an article in the Litchfield Independent Review website, smoke from the fire could be seen for miles:
The crash occurred when the semi, traveling westbound on 300th Street, failed to yield to the southbound garbage truck, and was broad-sided, according to the State Patrol. During the course of the crash the semi rolled, and then caught fire. Black smoke could be seen from miles away
The article also points out that because this was a high-impact crash, the protocol was to call in the Life Link helicopter, which was done in this instance for the semi truck driver, Jerry Weseman.
